Stripe, the online payment giant co-founded by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison, is making it easier for Europeans to buy and use cryptocurrencies. According to a recent Irish Independent report, the company has expanded its service to the EU, allowing shoppers to purchase Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and other digital assets using credit or debit cards.
This move builds on Stripe's recent introduction of stablecoin payments, which convert crypto transactions into traditional currencies like euros or dollars. By offering a platform for crypto marketplaces and vendors, Stripe aims to streamline the process of integrating crypto into everyday transactions.
To facilitate this, Stripe has developed a crypto-purchasing widget that businesses can easily add to their websites. The company will handle payment processing, dispute resolution, and regulatory compliance, allowing merchants to focus on growing their customer base.
With Ireland boasting a high rate of cryptocurrency ownership, Stripe's expansion is expected to be well-received. The company's overall payment volume surpassed $1 trillion in 2023, solidifying its position as a global leader in the industry. Its valuation recently surged to $70 billion after a significant investment from Sequoia Capital.
