In a recent filing, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has extended its decision timeline for BlackRock's proposal to launch a spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF) to March. The delay provides the SEC with additional time to thoroughly review the proposed rule change and address any raised concerns, as mentioned in Wednesday's filing.
The extended deadline for the SEC to approve, disapprove, or initiate further proceedings on the proposed fund is now set for March 10. BlackRock officially filed for its spot Ethereum ETF, named the iShares Ethereum Trust, in November. Concurrently, Fidelity's application for the Fidelity Ethereum Fund also experienced a delay, as revealed in a filing posted last week.
Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst James Seyffart anticipates continued delays for spot Ethereum ETF proposals in the coming months. In a post on X on Wednesday, Seyffart stated, "Spot Ethereum ETF Delays will continue to happen sporadically over the next few months. The next date that matters is May 23rd."

The delays in approving spot Ethereum ETFs underscore the regulatory complexities and thorough scrutiny these proposals face. Both BlackRock and Fidelity, major players in the financial industry, have sought approval for their respective Ethereum-focused ETFs, indicating a growing interest in offering investors exposure to cryptocurrency assets.
As the SEC extends its evaluation period, industry participants will closely monitor developments and anticipate the regulatory landscape surrounding spot Ethereum ETFs. The decision on BlackRock's proposal, now slated for March, holds significance for the broader cryptocurrency market, with potential implications for future ETF approvals and the evolving institutional adoption of digital assets.
