Business Insider reported that on January 3, Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX, will have the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty to eight counts of fraud and conspiracy during an arraignment hearing.
These charges stem from an alleged years-long fraud in which Bankman-Fried is accused of hiding the flow of money between FTX, his currency exchange, and Alameda Research, a cryptocurrency hedge fund he controlled. After being extradited from the Bahamas to the US last week, two of Bankman-Fried’s top lieutenants, Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang, pleaded guilty to fraud charges related to the FTX scandal and are now cooperating with the investigation.

Last Thursday, Sam Bankman-Fried was released on a $250 million bail by US Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein and required to stay at his parents’ home in Palo Alto, California, except for court appointments and exercise.
Now on January 3, Bankman-Fried is scheduled to enter a plea at an arraignment hearing in New York. This hearing was previously on the court’s calendar and was recently designated as an arraignment hearing, requiring Bankman-Fried to appear in person.
Two additional prosecutors, Samuel Raymond and Andrew Rohrbach, have been assigned to the case against Sam Bankman-Fried, Caroline Ellison, and Gary Wang. Rohrbach previously worked on the case against Ghislaine Maxwell, who was found guilty of sex trafficking and sexual abuse.
The criminal cases of Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and Wang have been assigned to US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, while Judge Ronnie Abrams recused herself due to her husband’s involvement with FTX and potential conflicts of interest.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who was appointed by President Clinton, has presided over several high-profile cases, including a defamation lawsuit against former President Trump.
