Cointelegraph reported that prosecutors are pushing for a lengthy 40-50 year sentence for Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Despite extradition limitations, the Government’s Sentencing Memorandum, spanning 116 pages and submitted to Judge Lewis Kaplan on March 15, meticulously outlines Bankman-Fried's involvement in a series of illicit activities.

The memorandum delves into Bankman-Fried's alleged scheme to make illegal political contributions, his attempted bribery of Chinese government officials, banking misconduct, efforts to deflect blame, and various obstructions of justice. Although Bankman-Fried was not charged with illegal political contributions or bribery of Chinese officials due to extradition limitations, the memorandum contends that he has failed to accept genuine responsibility for the collapse of FTX and the subsequent loss of customer funds.

In addition to drawing parallels between Bankman-Fried and notorious financial criminals like Bernie Madoff, the memorandum includes compelling testimonies from victims of Bankman-Fried's fraud, elucidating the turmoil caused by the collapse of FTX.

Despite Bankman-Fried's legal team requesting a maximum sentence of six and a half years, prosecutors argue for a lengthier term that adequately reflects the severity of his crimes while still allowing for eventual reintegration into society. Moreover, prosecutors are seeking an $11 billion judgment against him.

However, Judge Kaplan is not bound by these recommendations and will make the final decision during the sentencing hearing scheduled for March 28.
