How to Create NFT Domain Names
As the world of Web3 and NFTs progress, a new form of the domain has emerged. NFTs are most popularly known for being associated with digital art, but other Web3 assets can become NFTs as well. This includes domain names! In this guide, we will show you how to create your own NFT domain name using ENS and Unstoppable Domains. We will also discuss some of the benefits of using NFT domains over traditional domain names. Stay tuned!

What Is ENS?
Before we explain how to create an NFT domain name, it’s important to understand the basics of ENS. ENS, or the Ethereum Name Service, is a decentralized naming system that allows you to register human-readable names on the Ethereum blockchain. These names can be used to resolve a variety of Ethereum resources, including smart contracts, wallets, and more.
ENS names are stored in the form of subdomains. For example, if you register the name Vitalik, your ENS name will look like this: “Vitalik.eth”. This differs from the original Ethereum wallet address that starts with “0x” and is then followed by 40 characters.
By creating a much more user-friendly domain for Web3 users to interact with, ENS makes it easier for users to connect and access Ethereum resources. The process of registering an ENS name is called “name registration”. When you register an ENS name, you must pay a fee in ETH. This fee is important because it prevents spamming and fraud on the ENS system.
Now that we’ve explained the basics of ENS, let’s move on to how you can create an NFT domain name using ENS.
How To Create NFT Domain Names: Ethereum Name Services (ENS)
To create an NFT domain name using ENS, go to the website ens.domains. From here, you will need to select a domain name and register it. After you should see a button that allows you to launch the app.
Once the app is launched, you will be prompted to connect your Web3 wallet (MetaMask). If you’d like to skip this step and begin searching, you can do so. Many popular names are already registered. However, if you find a unique address that is available, you can register the name. This system works through what’s known as “registration periods”. Rather than owning the domain name forever, you are actually leasing it for a set period of time.
The most popular registration periods are one year, three years, and five years. However, you can also choose to register your domain for decades or even millennia. The benefit of longer registration periods is that it reduces the risk of someone else taking your domain name. If you are building a legacy brand or business and using the domain name as a form of payment gateway, you may want to consider a longer registration period.
The longer the registration period, the more ETH it will cost. However, longer registration periods also reduce the need to pay for gas as frequently. This is because you are only required to pay for gas when you first register the domain name and then again when you renew it. It’s also quite cost-effective as 10 years only costs about 0.030 ETH. To register a name, you must complete three stages.
The first stage is to request to register. When you make the request, your Web3 wallet will open and you will be asked to confirm the first transaction. You will then have 7 days to approve the second transaction. if you fail to do so, you will have to restart this stage from the beginning.
The second step requires patience. You can expect to wait for about 1 minute. This helps to protect you from others that might have requested the same domain name as you at around the same time.
Finally, you will need to click ‘register’ and your wallet should reappear. If you complete the second transaction, the name should be yours. It’s a fairly simple process but renting may not be the preference for some people. That’s where Unstoppable Domains comes into play.
What Are Unstoppable Domains?
Unstoppable Domains is a company that allows you to register “.crypto” domains on the blockchain. These domains can be used to resolve cryptocurrency wallets, smart contracts, and more. For example, you can use an Unstoppable Domain to send ETH to “YourName.crypto” instead of having to input a long string of characters.
Unlike traditional domain names, which are stored on central servers, Unstoppable Domains’ “.crypto” domains are stored on the blockchain. This makes them censorship-resistant and immune to domain name seizures.
Unstoppable Domains is integrated with over 300 applications. This domain service also differs from ENS because there are no renewal fees, no minting fees, and no gas fees. You can use an Unstoppable Domain for a wide range of purposes, including:
- Website URL
- Web3 Username
- Payment Gateway/Address
- And much more!
To register an Unstoppable Domain, go unstoppabledomains.com and create an account. Once you’ve created an account, you can start searching for available domains. If you find one that you like, you can add it to your cart and complete the checkout process.
After the purchase is complete, you should be able to see your purchased NFT domains under the ‘My Domains’ tab. You can choose to mint it through Polygon for free. This means that your domain will be stored on the blockchain and your address can be searched on its native explorer. If you want to use your domain for a website, you create your NFT doman website directly in your Unstoppable Domains account.
If you want to use your domain as a payment gateway, you can link it to a cryptocurrency wallet. By doing so, crypto that is sent to your domain address should appear in your linked wallet. For example, if you link an Unstoppable Domain to your MetaMask wallet, any crypto sent to that domain will automatically appear in your MetaMask wallet.
How To Create NFT Domain Names
Overall, Unstoppable Domains provides a convenient way to create and use NFT domain names. If leasing is your preference, then you can use ENS. However, if you want to own your domain name outright, then Unstoppable Domains is the way to go. Now that you know how to create NFT domain names, what will you use yours for?
