On April 29th, a 26-year-old man was arrested by the FIOD (the Dutch Financial Crimes Unit) on suspicion of fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering. According to the press release he arrest is connected to a large-scale scam involving ZKasino, an alleged online gambling platform. Over $30 million in cryptocurrency was invested by victims worldwide.
A house search yielded digital evidence, and authorities seized over €11.4 million in assets, including real estate, a luxury car, and various cryptocurrencies. The suspect's detention was extended for further investigation.
The investigation began on April 25th based on reports on social media (specifically Twitter) and intelligence gathered by the FIOD. ZKasino promised investors a return on their investment within 30 days, but this never happened. The technical setup of the platform's smart contract suggests it was never intended to return funds, possibly indicating a "rug pull" scam (explained below).
The FIOD collaborated with Binance's financial crime team to secure millions of euros in cryptocurrency. The FIOD and prosecutors are conducting digital financial investigations to identify those involved and recover stolen funds. Cooperation from the suspects is crucial for returning the victims' money. More arrests are a possibility.
