According to a recent Cointelegraph report, a Montenegrin appeals court has affirmed an earlier ruling to extradite Kwon to his home country of South Korea, where he will face charges related to the spectacular collapse of the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin.
The decision marks the end of a contentious legal battle that pitted the United States and South Korea against each other for Kwon's extradition. While both nations sought to prosecute the embattled crypto entrepreneur for his alleged role in the $40 billion implosion of the Terra ecosystem, the Montenegrin court ultimately sided with South Korea.
Kwon's legal troubles began in earnest when the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed fraud charges against him and Terraform Labs. The SEC alleged that the pair had engaged in a fraudulent scheme to manipulate the price of cryptocurrencies, causing billions of dollars in losses for investors. In a separate development, Terraform Labs agreed to a massive $4.47 billion settlement with the SEC, accepting responsibility for the collapse of the Terra ecosystem.
The extradition to South Korea is likely to be a significant blow to US authorities, who had sought to prosecute Kwon on US soil. It remains unclear what impact the decision will have on the ongoing legal proceedings against Terraform Labs.
