DBS Bank China has unveiled new solutions for its customers in mainland China regarding the digital yuan, also known as e-CNY. The bank has introduced the e-CNY merchant solution, enabling businesses in mainland China to accept payments in the central bank digital currency.

China has made notable progress in promoting and expanding the digital yuan since its launch in 2019, with acceptance in multiple cities and provinces. DBS Bank is known for its cryptocurrency-friendly approach and has previously launched crypto trading and custody services for institutional clients. The bank has also been involved in various government-related blockchain initiatives in Singapore.

DBS customers can receive or collect e-CNY, which will be automatically settled into their CNY bank deposit accounts. This service is referred to as a "merchant collection solution" rather than a payment solution, as the merchant collects the final amount in CNY in their bank account. The solution offers several advantages, such as streamlining the collection process by eliminating manual settlement procedures and facilitating payments in underserved regions with limited internet connectivity. DBS' digital platform for business banking provides consolidated merchant reports with detailed e-CNY transactions for easy reconciliation.

The first e-CNY transaction has been successfully completed with a catering company in Shenzhen. DBS Bank China CEO Ginger Cheng emphasized the bank's commitment to enhancing user experience and supporting China's financial market innovation. Lim Soon Chong, DBS Bank's head of global transaction services, sees this CBDC service as a significant step toward enabling instant and frictionless 24/7 payments and expressed interest in exploring cross-border CBDC payments.
