Bitcoin’s path to eclipsing gold isn’t a technical problem—it’s a statecraft problem. In Hong Kong, Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao said Bitcoin could overtake bullion as early as the next bull market, noting the market value gap has narrowed to roughly ten-to-one. His conviction rests on Bitcoin’s structural advantages. The real bottleneck, he argued, is that governments have entrenched systems for valuing, storing, and accounting for gold; swapping those pipes for crypto is a multi‑year rebuild.

That framing is right. Sovereign balance sheets are designed around legacy commodities and fiat instruments, not bearer digital assets. Central banks don’t just buy gold; they operate custody frameworks, audit standards, collateral policies, sanctions filters, and political narratives that justify holding it. Rewriting that stack for Bitcoin demands legal clarity, standardized valuation and risk models, energy and ESG answers, and career-safe pathways for civil servants who fear being early and wrong. This is institutional inertia, not code.

Zhao’s prescription for governments was blunt and intentionally simple: create a crypto reserve by excluding stablecoins, selecting the five largest non-stablecoin assets, and weighting by market capitalization. Applied today, that implies something near 50% Bitcoin, 10%–20% Ethereum, and a smaller allocation to other majors—including BNB, which he acknowledged makes the guidance “a little self-serving.” The transparency is welcome, though any sovereign adopting a rules-based basket would still need governance to manage conflicts, liquidity shocks, and protocol risks. Market-cap weighting feels neutral, but it can mask concentration risk and reflexivity during bull cycles.

His view that Bitcoin is a “better asset than gold” will always invite pushback from metal loyalists, yet it captures where digital scarcity outperforms: portability, auditability, and programmability. For state treasuries, though, those benefits matter only once operational frictions fall. That is why his utility drumbeat matters more than the headline price target. Zhao reiterated that a seven‑figure Bitcoin is plausible on a faster timeline than 25 years, but he tied durability to real-world use: payments at scale and Bitcoin becoming a cornerstone reserve for pension systems. If payrolls, pensions, and procurement settle over crypto rails, policy follow-through tends to happen.

He sees artificial intelligence as an accelerant. Autonomous agents, he said, will likely start transacting in crypto via stablecoins; once those rails are live, adding Bitcoin becomes straightforward. I tend to agree: stablecoins normalize private-key infrastructure for enterprises and governments, and they lower the cognitive cost of moving value on-chain. When the plumbing is in, asset mix shifts are a policy conversation, not an IT project.

On AI financing, Zhao said he has discussed token launches with several top-tier AI firms whose compute ambitions dwarf traditional capital markets’ pace. At today’s prices, a single gigawatt of compute may run $30 billion to $50 billion, and some players target hundreds of gigawatts within a few years—implying trillions in capex. One model under review is a “data center token” that entitles holders to future rewards or compute credits, potentially extended to subscriptions and model access. Tokenizing capacity could match capital to usage far more nimbly than debt or equity, but it raises investor-protection questions and securities-law complexity that states will scrutinize—especially if those tokens end up on public balance sheets.

Zhao also argued that AI will transform trading before retail payments. He put the trading efficiency gain near tenfold because markets reward microsecond decisioning across fragmented data, whereas consumers can already click to buy once an agent finds a deal. That rings true. Expect agentic trading to compress arbitrage and widen dispersion between firms with and without model access, pulling more liquidity—and risk—onto venues comfortable with API-driven flow.

For context, Zhao stepped down as Binance CEO in 2023 after pleading guilty to a U.S. money laundering charge. That backdrop makes his state-adoption thesis more notable: he’s pushing a long-horizon, compliance-heavy agenda where quick wins are scarce.

If Bitcoin is going to outrun gold, price hype won’t do it. Sovereigns will need turnkey custody, standardized accounting, sanctioned-entity screening, climate reporting, and clear public-interest narratives around pensions and payments. The gap to bullion is still about 10x; closing it requires less evangelism and more infrastructure that lets risk-averse institutions act without career suicide. That is slow work—until it isn’t. When stablecoin rails are normalized and AI agents demand programmable settlement, policy windows open, and what once looked ideological starts to look operational.
