On Friday, Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal announced the exchange's challenge against the SEC's rejection of its request for new crypto regulations. Earlier that day, the SEC dismissed Coinbase's long-standing plea, calling it "unwarranted."
Grewal expressed disappointment and stated they would seek the Third Circuit's help in challenging the SEC's neglect of duty. Tensions between Coinbase and the SEC have persisted since 2022 when the exchange sought new rules. Grewal noted disagreement from Republican SEC Commissioners, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue.

The SEC has not proposed specific crypto rules but introduced relevant rulemakings in the past year. Enforcement actions, including one against Coinbase for operating as an unregistered exchange, are ongoing. SEC Chair Gary Gensler highlighted the agency's responsibility to allocate resources effectively, citing the crypto market's smaller size compared to the broader capital markets exceeding $110 trillion. Gensler stressed the importance of retaining discretion for updating regulations where needed.
