Bitcoin pops to $82.8K, but ETF outflows and rising yields keep $80K risk alive
Bitcoin rebounds 1.38% to $82,837 after a drop to $80,427, yet ETF outflows, 5.32% Treasury yields, and prediction markets still price notable odds of a retest below $80K.

Bitcoin’s bounce looks better on the chart than in the order books. Price ticked up 1.38% to $82,837 on Friday after slipping to $80,427 on Thursday—its weakest print since early September—while total crypto market cap recovered roughly 2% to about $2.8T, with some trackers showing a 2.1% rise to $2.89T. That’s still shy of last week’s $3T-plus peak. Sentiment cooled as the Fear & Greed Index eased to a neutral 56 from 71 on October 2.
The tell this week wasn’t price—it was flow. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $484.9 million in outflows on Wednesday, their worst single day since June 25, followed by another $244 million on Thursday. Those exits lined up with a macro shock: the 10-year Treasury yield tagged 5.32% as Fed minutes signaled another potential hike by year-end. When the risk-free rate re-prices higher, marginal BTC demand from traditional allocators often fades first, and ETF tapes are where that shows up in real time.
Here’s why the $83,000 zone matters. Bitwise Europe’s Luke Deans notes it aligns the average ETF cost basis with a prior higher-high. That confluence tends to attract programmatic flows and discretionary buyers who anchor to “breakeven” levels. Reclaiming and holding above $83,000 would put $84,433 in play, with September’s high at $87,354.33 as the level bulls likely need to close above on a daily basis to reassert control. Fail there, and the market keeps trading psychology—not just price—below water.
Short-term structure still argues caution. Friday’s daily candle opened at $81,711 and ranged between $81,553 and $83,443. On the 4-hour, BTC remains below the 50-period EMA, so the near-term trend hasn’t flipped. The ADX prints 37.9 on the daily—trend strength is real—but DI+ sits over DI-, indicating the broader uptrend remains intact despite the pullback. RSI at 51.2 is neutral, consistent with the sentiment reset.
Traders are explicitly pricing the chop. On Myriad, the prediction market by Dastan, there’s a 67% chance Bitcoin trades at or below $80,000 at some point in October, with 40% odds assigned to $77,500 and 24% to $75,000. A separate weekly market pegs a 49% probability that BTC finishes the week above $87,500—translation: participants expect compression, with room for downside probes before any topside break.
I’d key on behavior around ETF flows as the primary driver over the next leg. If yields stay elevated and ETFs bleed, $83,000 likely acts as supply and those $80,000 downside probabilities can get realized. If flows stabilize and $83,000 is reclaimed with volume, $84,433 and then $87,354.33 open up quickly. In this regime, the tape is less about “new information” and more about who’s forced to rebalance when policy and passive flows nudge the chessboard.
